Beauty School Training
As all the subjects covered under the general heading of health and beauty require a technical and detailed training, the choice of training establishment must be considered with great care. It is impossible to learn on an apprenticeship or in a situation where a student is trained on the job. Anyone offering this kind of training would basically only be teaching a few practical skills, making the student really only employable by that establishment. No other employer in the field of health and beauty would consider accepting a therapist who had not completed an authentic course of training at an approved college, and had the necessary certificates to prove it.
An employer would be looking for proof that the applicant for a post had followed a recognised course of training and shown enough practical skill and theoretical knowledge to enable her to be awarded the necessary qualification diplomas and certificates.
In health and beauty therapy, as in other professions, there are many training courses and examination bodies that have been set up over the years, some good and some not so good. Without going into the politics of the situation, one can safely
say that there are three main organisations offering syllabuses and examinations with which the majority of good colleges, both technical and private, comply. They are:
The City and Guilds of London Institute.
The Confederation of International Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology which is the educational and examination branch of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology.
The International Health and Beauty Council which is the educational and examination branch of The International Federation of Health and Beauty Therapists. (This organisation also has within its jurisdiction an educational and examination branch called the International Institute of Sports Therapy.)
Although these three organisations have slightly different views on some aspects of the work, their basic approach to the teaching of the subject is the same, and their syllabuses in Igeneral cover the same amount of work and to the same depth of study. Most good colleges offer a course of training covering the Syllabuses and leading to both theoretical and practical examinations of one or often two of the above examination boards.
